Miley Cyrus was originally set to voice Mavis Dracula in Hotel Transylvania (2012) before Selena Gomez took over the role.

Miley Cyrus was fired from Hotel Transylvania.
Turns out, Hotel Transylvania almost had a different voice behind the iconic character of Mavis Dracula. Back in 2012, before Selena Gomez stepped in, it was Miley Cyrus who had been cast to play the vampire daughter of Count Dracula. But then, as Miley now reveals, she got fired and the reason is wild.
On a recent episode of Monica Lewinsky’s Reclaiming podcast (aired June 10), Miley opened up about why she lost the role, and it involved a birthday cake, a cheeky joke, and her then-boyfriend Liam Hemsworth.
“I, as a joke, got my boyfriend a penis cake for his birthday and I got fired,” she shared. “I was the lead actress in Hotel Transylvania, and they fired me and replaced me because I had made an inappropriate, adult joke.”
Miley, who was 18 at the time, pointed out the contradiction she was living with – old enough to work in a kids’ movie, but still held to standards that ignored her age. “I was 18 — so yes, I was fine to work in a kids movie but I’m not a kid.”
What made it even more frustrating for her was how harmless and normal the prank felt. “What felt ridiculous to me about getting fired from a penis cake was that they sell penis cakes like for all bachelorettes,” she explained. “Like in Nashville, Tennessee, you can get penis cakes, it’s not that big of a deal. I thought, you know, this is like a very simple, not vulgar joke, this is silly. And you can do this for all bachelorette parties — they make necklaces and cups and straws and all kinds of stuff.”
She talked about how the entertainment industry, especially when it comes to child stars growing up, often blurs the lines between personal life and professional image. “To be fired, you know, for regular things that girls my age — they go to bachelorette parties and they go to Magic Mike shows. But if I was at that time, you know, I wasn’t someone that was appropriate for kids, even though that was in my personal life.”
When asked if she feels the industry is any different for young stars today, Miley offered a pretty honest take: “I don’t know if we put our Disney kids on the pedestal the way that we used to, our teen stars. But I think that still, movies can have consequences for their lead actor or actress doing things that don’t align with the audience that the movie is made for.”
Following Miley’s exit, Selena Gomez took over the role of Mavis.
