MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Wisconsin Fat Bird Week has ended, and the results are in!
Jiggly Junco, a dark-eyed Junco bird, flew to victory in the competition, the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin said Monday.
Jiggly Junco took down runner-up Wood Duck with a Dad Bod in the final matchup, receiving 59% of the vote while Dad Bod took 41%.
Other members of the competition included Bluebird Couple Who Let Themselves Go, Chungus Cardinal, Whoppin’ Wigeon, Massive Meadowlark, Ginormous Goldfinch, and Tubby Tree Swallow.
The Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin said the purpose of Fat Bird Week is to turn the joy of looking at photos of “fat” birds into awareness about the plight of Wisconsin’s native bird population, and how the public can keep them fat and healthy.
During the competition, organizers shared information and tips about how people can plant native plants, treat windows to help birds from colliding with them, choose bird-friendly coffee and participate in the Great Wisconsin Birdathon.
“It can be easy to become overwhelmed and apathetic when you hear about loss of wildlife habitat, invasive species, etc.” said Shelly Torkelson from the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin. “But Wisconsin Fat Bird Week tries to inspire action through fun and friendly competition.”
Jiggly Junco quickly became a fan favorite in the competition, with social media user @dmint96 saying “It looks like he is wearing a smaller, inferior bird’s wing as a disguise or perhaps a Halloween costume. He is about to burst.”
Another social media user, @chelaverse, said “That’s a lot of junc in the trunk.”
